Urdu to Hindi or English Transliteration


Since Urdu and Hindi are grammatically same language and they also share a very good number of words, its easier for both speakers to understand each others’ language. The only obstacle is the script. Pakistan chose Arabic script instead of Devnagari for Urdu. And the script does not transliterate well into Hindi or probably roman too.

Here is a modest try to convert Urdu text into Hindi. It’s no where closer to being perfect but may be this is first step.

Enter an Urdu site: http://www.voanews.com/urdu/
Select “Urdu to Hind” in the Language drop down. And click GO.

If you know Urdu letters and somewhat Hindi you can help me out developing a transliteration logic. OR you can give me a map of URDU letters to ENGLISH letters and I can do the rest.

    एक कड़ी है – यहाँ पर हिन्दी से उर्दू ट्रांसलिट्रेशन औजार बनाया है. इसके विकास कर्ता से संपर्क कर सकते हैं और भोमियो में हिन्दी से उर्दू ट्रांसलिट्रेशन भी डाल सकते हैं.

    अंग्रेजी रोमन से हिन्दी के लिए मैंने आपसे पूर्व में ही निवेदन कर ही दिया है. :)

Uske baad humne iron kila bhi dekha aur bhuat jagha ghume aur hum pakila market bhi gaye wo under ground me bana tha. Raat ho gai thi hum metro train me bhi bhete. Meri man pasand jagha thi appughar ka bhaut bagla aur indai gate. Aur mujhe waha ka croud achha nhai laga. And usko kaam karne ke liye me kuch nahi kar sakti thi.

  26. I have only one comment to make regarding the statement made by writer of above article. Statement is “Pakistan chose Arabic script instead of Devnagari for Urdu”. I just want to say following :
    1. Urdu does not use “Arabic script” . It uses Persian script.
    2. Persian was script of urdu much before pakistan was formed.
    So please cross check the facts before making any statement.

I tried translating it out; but there’s a bit of garbled letter-forms plus my limited vocabulary in Urdu (haven’t read higher-end stuff in quite a bit of time) and the fact that I don’t have a feroze-e-loghat handy on me meant that this English translation is the closest I can achieve in a short time. You can say the following is an educated guess at the meaning of the Urdu text written above:

    This is the best religious poem among all I’ve encountered in my life; in which the Prophet’s Mahraj is depicted. It praises the Prophet and verifies his experience; as well as states that it is the wise people of the world who have kept the world in a holding pen. The correct people will, during the Day of Judgement, be successful in overthrowing the rulers of this world and going forward will alter the world and possibly in this manner even cause the world to come to an end.

    You’re not entirely correct. The script Urdu is written in, known these days as Nastaliq, is an adaptation of the Persian script to suit the Urdu language. This nastaloq has been in relatively wide usage in the Muslim strata and the upper non-Muslim strata of Hindustani society since about the 17th Century.
    The Devanagri script that Hindi is written in is an adaptation of the Gupta script, arising roughly in the 13th century.
    Nastaliq was used to address the defeciency in Devanagari that it used agglutinative alphabets, which have a tendency to lead to excessive complexity in learning to read and write.
    Nastaliq has the benefit of being able to combine letters without creating new shapes for learners to have to memorize; and also of trying to shape its letters such that they mimic the shape of your mouth when you say the letters.
    Hence it is easier to become literate in Nastaliq than it is to become literate in Devanagri.

    Pakistan and India are relatively recent formations, with the concept of India being circa 160 years old and the concept of Pakistan being circa 90 years old. Trying to assign one language to a country is denying years of history; and a history forgotten implies mistakes will be repeated.
